Iyengar yoga emphasises precision, alignment and safety in the poses and poses may be held for longer than in some other forms of yoga. The use of props such as blankets, belts and bricks help students understand the pose and make poses accessible if there are any physical difficulties.

There is no set routine for classes and a wide range of poses are taught from all the groups eg. Standing, seated, twists, inversions etc. Classes are progressive and more challenging poses are taught as the student gains experience.

Iyengar yoga method was taught by B.K.S. Iyengar in Pune India and internationally for over 75 years. He established teacher training programmes for the method in the U.K. in the 1970’s and qualified teachers are examined at the end of a 2 year course and undertake continued professional development to remain certified.
